It's time for another Gettysburg Photo of the Week and for this week I have chosen a picture of the Maryland State Memorial. Maryland was a border state during the Civil War with divided loyalties. Although the state remained loyal to the Union it also had large amount of Southern sympathizers. The state also furnished many soldiers that fought for both the Union and the Confederacy.
The Maryland monument features two soldiers, one Union and one Confederate, helping each other off the field of battle. Both Union and Confederate units from Maryland fought against each other on Culp's Hill during the second day of the battle.
