Brian Schneider Likely Done For The Season

Hi everybody,

Brian Schneider has been on the DL for the last few weeks but word has come out that he is unlikely to return this season.  This is probably Schneider's last season as a Phillie with the emergence of Erik Kratz as a legitimate backup catcher to Carlos Ruiz. Get well and good luck!!

Game 51: Phillies (26-24) at Mets (27-22)

Tough loss for the Phils.  Joe Blanton pitched his third straight bad game. With Roy Halladay out of action for 6-8 weeks, Blanton and the other starting pitchers need to play better and pickup the slack.  As for tonight's game, Brian Schneider got the Phils only RBI with his second Home Run of the season.  The other two runs were due to a wild pitch and fielding error.  Cliff Lee goes for the series win and his first win of the season tomorrow night. Go Phils!!!

Game 37: Astros (15-20) at Phillies (17-19)

The Phils win their first extra innings game of the season as well as their first three game winning streak.  Cliff Lee pitched great for eight innings but Chad Qualls coughed up the lead in the 9th...with a little bit of help from a botched throw attempt by Hunter Pence.  Pence would redeem himself in the 10th inning with a game winning Home Run....his second of the day and ninth this season.  Jake Diekman also made his Phillies debut and got the win by getting the last four Astros he faced out.  He looked very impressive.  Brian Schneider also hit well and got his first Home Run of the season.  The Phils are now off to Chicago to play a short two game series against the Cubs before returning to Philly this weekend.  Let's hope they continue to extend the winning streak.  Go Phils!!!

Nice series win for the Phils on Mother's Day.  Jimmy Rollins hit his first Home Run of the season and Cole Hamels continues to pitch amazing as he improved his record to 5-1.  Jonathan Papelbon also got his tenth save of the season.  The Phils will be playing the Astros tomorrow evening so lets hope they can start a winning streak.  Go Phils!!!

Nice comeback win by the Phils.  Cole Hamels looked a little shaky at times but still managed his second win.  It was also nice to see Brian Schneider get both his first hit and RBI of the season.  Still hope that Chooch will be back in the lineup soon.  Time to win at least three straight tonight.

Hi everybody,

Backing up Chooch again

Just wanted to post a quick update on some of the happenings with the Phillies.  First off, the Phils resigned back-up catcher Brian Schneider to a one-year deal worth $800,000.  It will be good to see Schneider back with the team again next season.  Even though he isn't a great offensive weapon, he is a good defensive catcher who was helpful to Vance Worley & Kyle Kendrick last season. He is also a great clubhouse presence and will be able to give Carlos Ruiz (or if you prefer Chooch) some days off.

Ty Wigginton

The other move the Phils made was a trade with the Colorado Rockies for Ty Wigginton for a player to be named later.  Wigginton can play 1st base, 3rd base, left field & right field.  I envision him seeing time at all four positions especially with Ryan Howard's injury as well as the uncertain status of oft-injured Placido Polanco.  Wigginton can give Polanco more time off which should lessen the wear and tear on his body.

Wigginton's salary for this upcoming season is only $2 million dollars so the Phils still have some money to obtain either Jimmy Rollins or another shortstop as well as another bench player.  Perhaps a left handed bat that can play left field?  I would still consider Raul Ibanez as that player if the cost is not too high.  He could platoon the position with John Mayberry, Jr....who I imagine will also be playing some 1st base while Howard is out.   I guess we will find out.
