Happy Thanksgiving

I'm off to my friends' place to watch some football and eat lots of turkey with all the trimmings.  I thought about making my famous deviled eggs but I realized they might not fit in so I got some booze instead.  Hope you all have a great Thanksgiving and have lots to be thankful for!

Bob McClure Hired as Phillies Pitching Coach

The Phillies hired Bob McClure to be the new pitching coach.  McClure previously served as the pitching coach of the Kansas City Royals from 2006-2011 and the Boston Red Sox in 2012.

150th Anniversary of The Gettysburg Address

Hi everybody,

Today is the 150th Anniversary of The Gettysburg Address which was delivered by President Abraham Lincoln on November 19, 1863 at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg.

Here is the text of The Gettysburg Address:

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that this nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate, we can not consecrate, we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

Carlos Ruiz Re-Signs with Phillies

Hi everybody,

Just wanted to report that catcher Carlos Ruiz has re-signed with the Phillies.  The contract is for the next three seasons at $26 million.  I am a bit surprised that the Phils gave Ruiz a three-year worth that much cash but I am happy that Chooch will be with the team for the next three seasons.

Marlon Byrd Signs with the Phillies

Hi everybody,

This news is a few days old and I do apologize for not posting it sooner but I wanted to mention that the Phillies have signed free agent outfielder Marlon Byrd to a contract.  This contract is for two-years at $16 million.  This is Byrd's second go-round with the Phillies (he was with the club from 2002-2005) and is expected to be the starting right fielder next season.  Welcome back, Marlon!

Halloween Update

Hi everybody,

Time for my last Halloween update for 2013.  I sure got a lot of candy this year!


When I got home from Trick-or-Treating I watched The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and had some milk and cookies.  It's become my tradition to watch that before I go to bed on Halloween.




I had a little visit with my Jack-o-lantern piggy too!  I wanted to spend some time with him before he had to get put away with the other decorations.


I never got a chance to use this prop casket for my costume so I thought I'd put my candy in it.


I may have eaten a little too much.

I don't feel so good...

Gettysburg Photo of the Week (11-1-13)

Hi everybody,

It's time for the first Gettysburg Photo of the Week for November.  This picture is of the Coster Avenue Mural and it depicts fighting on July 1st, 1863 between the forces of Union Colonel Charles R. Coster and the units of Confederate Brigadier General Harry Hays & Colonel Isaac Avery.



This mural was dedicated on the 125th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg and is among the least visited areas of the battlefield.  If you get a chance, take the time to visit this beautiful mural.  You won't be sorry.
