Gettysburg Photo of the Week (8-30-13)

Hi everybody,

It's Labor Day weekend and I can't think of a better way to start it than with the next Gettysburg Photo of the Week.  This week's picture is another one taken by my friends several years ago when they visited Gettysburg.  It is the Louisiana State Memorial and this monument is located along West Confederate Avenue.  If you look carefully you can also see the Mississippi State Memorial in the background.  No need to strain your eyes too much because I plan to have a picture of that monument in the coming weeks.

Hunter Pence August Update

Let's Go Eat...
Hi everybody,

Welcome to the latest Hunter Pence update.  In case you want to catch up....here are the previous updates:

Hunter Pence July Update

Hunter Pence June Update

Hunter Pence May Update

Hunter Pence April Update

Here are Hunter's stats as of the end of the day on August 27th, 2013:

Batting Average = .278
RBIs = 66
Home Runs = 16
Runs Scored = 68
Walks = 36
Stolen Bases = 19
Strike Outs = 90

Pence's numbers have improved somewhat over the last month especially in RBIs and Runs Scored.  I continue to believe that Pence would have been an asset to the Phillies this season.  I don't think they would have made the playoffs but they certainly would have more wins.  Although I don't think they will, the Phils should try to sign Pence if/when he becomes a free agent at the end of the season.

I've decided to include two photos for the Hunter Pence Photo of the Month.  The first picture is right after Hunter scored a run.

The second is a pic from the second game that Pence was a member of the Phils.  It was against the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Phils has just come back and won the game.  Many of the players (past and present) are celebrating the win with Pence...including Chase, Raul Ibanez and Shane Victorino.  This was also the game where Pence uttered his catch phrase "Let's Go Eat!".  I must say that I miss those fun days in 2011.

Roy Halladay Returns to the Phillies Today

Hi everybody,

Phillies starting pitcher Roy Halladay will be returning from the disabled list a bit earlier than scheduled due to the extra long game played last night/this morning against the Arizona Diamondbacks. That milestone game saw today's scheduled starter Tyler Cloyd in five innings of relief work.  Halladay was scheduled for a rehab start with the Reading Fightin' Phils this afternoon but will instead pitch for our Phillies. Welcome back, Doc!

Domonic Brown Injured in Last Night's Game

Hi everybody,

During last night's/this morning's extra long game against the Arizona Diamonbacks, outfielder Domonic Brown injured his right Achilles tendon.  The Phils are stating that the injury is just a bruise and Brown islisted as day-to-day.  Dom was lifted from the game in the third inning and will hopefully be back in action in the next couple of days.

Longest game (time wise) in Phillies history at seven hours and six minutes. The Phils used their entire bullpen as well as today's starter Tyler Cloyd. They were forced to use outfielder Casper Wells and position player John McDonald as pitchers in the 18th inning.  I'm tired.

Ryan Howard Unlikely to Return this Season

Hi everybody,

Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard is unlikely to return this season. Howard has been on the disabled list since July 6th with an injury to his left knee.  He has since had surgery and the Phils management feel that it would be beter to shut Howard down for the season.  The Big Piece is currently rehabbing in Florida and will stay there through the off-season to be ready by Spring Training in February.

Jonathan Pettibone Done for the Season

John Lannan Hurts Left Knee - May Be Done For Season

Phillies starting pitcher John Lannan left last night's game against the Atlanta Braves in the second inning with an injury to his left knee.  It is the same knee that Lannan hurt earlier in the year.  That injury put him on the DL (Disabled List) for two months.  It is quite possible that Lannan may be done for the season.  I want to wish John Lannan a speedy recovery.

Charlie Manuel Gets 1000th Win as MLB Manager

Hi everybody,

Just wanted to congratulate Phillies skipper Charlie Manuel for his 1000th win as a Major League manager.  Charlie got his 1000th win last night against the Atlanta Braves.  Manuel is the 59th manager in Major League history to get 1000 or more wins and the 8th active manager to reach that milestone.  Manuel got his 1000 wins with the Cleveland Indians (where he managed from 2000-2002) and the Phillies (where he has managed since the start of the 2005 season). Manuel has 780 of those wins with the Phils and the other 220 with the Indians.  Congrats Charlie!

This was my favorite victory of the 1000....

Gettysburg Photo of the Week (8-11-13)

Hi everybody,

I apologize once again for being late in posting this.  I have been dropping the ball with this feature and I will do my best to have it posted each and every Friday for at least the rest of this year.

This week's picture is of the Virginia Memorial shortly after sunrise.  The picture was taken at a different angle that you would normally see in photos but I think it looks good.

Virginia Memorial

The Virginia Memorial was placed on the battlefield in 1917 and was the first of the Confederate State Memorials.  The top of the monument has General Robert E. Lee who was the commanding officer of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia.  This location is where Pickett's Charge originated on the third and final day of the Battle of Gettysburg.

Talkin' Phils with Little Chase (8-11-13)

Hi everybody,

I haven't done one of these in a very long time.  I have a few quick updates to report so here goes:

Roy Halladay:

Doc threw 75 pitches in a simulated game on Saturday in Clearwater, FL.  By all accounts, he looked good.  Halladay is scheduled to throw a bullpen session tomorrow and if it goes well, he will pitch a minor league rehab game on Thursday.  That means we could see Doc return to the big leagues by early September.  Yay!

Looking forward to seeing this again...

Laynce Nix & Demon Young:

Earlier this week, Laynce Nix & Delmon Young were designated for assignment to make room on the roster for the returning Domonic Brown and new Phillies outfielder Casper Wells.  Here are the final 2013 stats for Nix and Young:

Laynce Nix:

Batting Average = .180
RBIs = 7
Home Runs = 2
Runs Scored = 11
Walks = 8
Stolen Bases = 1
Strike Outs = 44

Delmon Young:

Batting Average = .261
RBIs = 31
Home Runs = 8
Runs Scored = 22
Walks = 14
Stolen Bases = 0
Strike Outs = 69

I wish Nix and Young all the best.  I really don't know much about Casper Wells but I do hope he isn't annoying like another Casper that I know.
